Recently, the Trump administration and ICE have been deporting immigrants and revoking student visas. Trump has made promises stating that he will deport 10 million people, and in the process, has devastatingly separated families. He has taken education away from students, which is extremely unfair.
Trump has made it his goal to deport, in his horrible words, “illegal aliens.” According to NBC News, since Trump came into office, arrests have doubled, and in just February and March alone, 23,000 migrants have been deported. Deporting this many people separates many parents from their children or just takes them away from their home and community. The rest of their community will continue to live in fear and grief.
From more than 280 universities and colleges across the country, 1,800 students have been affected. It is arbitrary to revoke student visas, and it’s unconstitutional to take away students’ education because of “crimes.” Some of these “crimes” include protesting and living as a person of color. Students will not be able to work at their full capacity if they are living in fear. Fear of getting their education taken away is horrible and disgusting. College and university students should not have to worry about deportation.
A painful example of what happens to deported migrants is Kilmar Abrego Garcia. He was wrongfully deported to El Salvador and then sent to prison there. When arrested, Garcia was thought to be an MS-13 gang member and a criminal. Garcia never committed any crimes and was legally living in the U.S. There was no real reason for Garcia to be deported, and it is sad how Trump, in an ABC interview, acknowledges the “administrative error” and will not fix it. Garcia is one of many who have been stereotyped and discriminated against. Trump calls migrants “aliens” and dehumanizes them.
People should not have to live in fear of being deported or their community being deported and ripped apart. Mostly people of color and people who speak their mind are being targeted by Trump, and we need to support our community, especially those who are vulnerable!
