Why Humans Can’t Remember Being Babies

Most people can recall their first day of school or a favorite childhood toy. But ask anyone to describe a memory from infancy, and the mind goes blank. Despite being alive, aware, and constantly learning as babies, humans are unable to remember the earliest years of their lives. This phenomenon is known as infantile amnesia, and it helps us understand how the human brain actually works.

At first, infantile amnesia seems unusual. Babies clearly learn from their surroundings. They recognize the adults around them, respond to routines, and show emotional reactions to familiar voices and faces. This learning, however, does not rely on the same type of memory adults use to recall personal experiences. Infants primarily depend on short-term memory systems, which allow them to acquire skills and recognize patterns but do not store memories in a way that can be consciously retrieved years later. Long-term autobiographical memory depends on brain structures that are still developing during infancy.

One of the most important of these is the hippocampus, a region of the brain that is essential for forming and organizing long-term memories. In infants, the hippocampus is not yet fully developed, which limits its ability to turn experiences into lasting memories. While the brain is capable of recording sensory information, it lacks the neurological capability required to preserve those experiences as personal records. As a result, early experiences fade as the brain develops more advanced memory systems.

Language plays an equally important role in why early memories are inaccessible. Human memory is connected to words and storytelling. Babies experience the world without language, which means processing emotions and sensations without the ability to label or describe them. When language later becomes an important memory tool, preverbal experiences become difficult to remember because they were never stored in a verbal form. 

Although adults cannot consciously remember infancy, early experiences still create lasting effects. Research suggests that infancy is key to forming emotional development, stress regulation, and attachment patterns. These influences are stored in implicit memory systems rather than conscious recall. In this way, the body and brain retain the influence of early experiences even when the mind cannot retrieve the specific memories.

Infantile amnesia plays a key role in the development of identity. Autobiographical memory is important to the sense of self. It allows humans to see their lives as continuous stories. However, the inability to recall infant memories perhaps suggests that the sense of self emerges gradually rather than being fully formed at birth. Babies experience the world, but they do not yet experience it as a story centered around a certain identity.

Ongoing research continues to explore whether early memories are completely erased or simply inaccessible due to changes in how the brain stores information. Regardless, infantile amnesia is a natural consequence of the human brain designed for flexibility and learning. Rather than preserving every experience, the developing brain prioritizes adaptation and social understanding.

The inability to remember infancy may feel like a loss, but it is crucial in human development. Memory is not a perfect record of the past but a system shaped by biology, language, and culture. Infantile amnesia reminds us that memory is not for preserving everything we experience, but to help us make sense of who we truly are.
