The U.S Has a New Aging Crisis: Nuclear Energy

Since the boom of nuclear energy in the 70s and 80s, the U.S has been asleep at the wheel, neglecting systems of the future by letting them sit in the past.  

Indeed, our nuclear fleet hasn’t been updated in decades. Worryingly, each year an aging reactor operates, cracks, corrosion, and material degradation compromise its safety, increasing the risk of leaks, malfunctions, or even meltdowns. 

Furthermore, all 54 US nuclear plants sit in zones increasingly threatened by flooding, storms and wildfires, waiting for something to go wrong. 

Worst of all, that the majority of nuclear power plants in the US use the exact same reactor model as those that melted down in Japan’s Fukushima disaster. 

Yet instead of modernizing, we’ve only kicked the can down the road. The U.S government has been extending the length of nuclear reactors licenses without actually updating them. Nuclear plants created to work for just 40 years have been licensed to operate over 100. 

Although we shouldn’t substantially expand our nuclear energy production (check out my previous article!), we must seriously consider updating our current plants. It’s either modernize or leave our aging fleet as a ticking time bomb.

To guide this argument, let’s compare new nuclear power plants to our old ones on three metrics:

1] Accidents

Modern reactors emit 10 times less radiation and are 10 times less prone to leaks, cracks, and core damage compared to the US’s aging fleet – dramatically reducing health and safety risks.

And it’s not just leaks. The worst meltdowns in nuclear history – Chernobyl, Fukushima, and Three Mile Island – stemmed from aging, underfunded plants. But thankfully, modern nuclear reactors make meltdowns 500 times less likely. 

Preventing accidents through upgrades is vital as 6 million people live within 10 miles of a nuclear reactor. 

2] Waste

Modern nuclear reactors generate 100x less nuclear waste than old reactors – and the waste that they do produce decays 25x faster. 

Furthermore, with enough investment, 97% of nuclear waste can be recycled and used as fuel, as done in other nations like France. 

Absent updates, waste will keep piling up. ⅓ of Americans, or 113 million people, live within 50 miles of a nuclear waste storage site, posing severe health risks. 

3] Environment

Modern power plants are nearly 20 times more energy efficient than current ones. By displacing fossil fuels with this energy, economist Ronald Bailey this January concluded each new plant saves 10,000 lives. Already, the lack of investment into nuclear has killed nearly 2 million people.

Ultimately, nuclear energy is not the solution to all our problems, but it’s still important to recognize that we can’t just neglect our reactors. For America’s safety and health, we must invest into the next generation of reactors.
