Meet Tim Walz: America’s Dad, Coach and Potential Vice President

Last updated on August 28, 2024

Progressives across the United States have renewed hope after Kamala Harris has taken the reigns of the Democratic party. A recent poll by MSNBC has Harris six percentage points above Former President Trump. Although Democrats have tended to lean away from personal insults, this has been a key tactic in increasing donations and overall support for the party. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the founder of the “weird” trend, was recently announced as Kamala Harris’ Vice President pick. His consistent callouts of conservative politicians and hypocrisy by the GOP have gained significant media attention. His charisma and witty personality are just what Democrats need after Biden’s rocky debate, but his public service background makes him stand out the most as a candidate.

His Background

Walz was born in West Point, Nebraska on April 6, 1964. His small hometown had only 3,500 people. During his high school education, Walz’s father was diagnosed with cancer and he moved to Butte, Nebraska, a town of just 400 people. This experience shaped his outlook on the nation’s healthcare system when his mother was forced to work tirelessly for years to pay his father’s medical bills.

After graduating from Butte High School, Walz joined the National Guard and served for 24 years, which makes him the longest-serving United States representative in history.  He utilized the veteran benefits of the GI Bill to attend Chadron State College in Nebraska to obtain his teaching degree. He taught high school students in China in 1990 and can still speak fragments of Mandarin today.

When he returned to the United States to complete his service and continue his teaching career, Walz married his wife, Gwen Whipple, in 1994. At the time, she was teaching next door to his classroom and remembered being vaguely irritated by his loud voice. Although initially struggling with infertility, Gwen delivered two children with the support of IVF treatments, a resource Republicans want to outlaw. In 1996, he moved to Gwen’s hometown of Mankato, Minnesota with her.

The pair taught at Mankato West High School where Walz was a geography teacher. He famously revived the school’s football team into state champions before starting his political career in 2006 and retiring from the National Guard. The Democrats have truly capitalized off of his experiences as a teacher and member of the military, promoting his dedication to public service. Voters nationwide appreciate his background and genuine attitude, compared to JD Vance, which is reflected in the polls

His Political Career

When Walz was governor and representative of Minnesota’s first district, he’s taken a widely progressive stance. Although JD Vance has called his position “San Francisco-style liberalism,” Walz’s small-town values have portrayed him as anything but a radical Democrat; moreover, Vance lived in San Francisco for years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Walz’s effective response to the virus has gained media attention, demonstrating his powerful leadership skills. He instituted mask and vaccine mandates to limit the spread of the disease.

However, his term hasn’t been all butterflies and rainbows. Walz has been criticized for not immediately deploying the National Guard to suppress riots in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd. He defended his actions by outwardly stating that the deployment would only consist of chaotic 19-year-olds, but conservative media outlets state that “he was fearful of alienating his progressive base, who were supporting the riots.” Despite this portrayal, Walz has been known for championing equal rights for women and the LGBTQ community.

After Roe v Wade was overturned, he was quick to sign the Protect Reproductive Options Act into legislation, which protected access to reproductive healthcare and the right to choose. While teaching at Mankato West High School, Walz proudly supported the gay-straight alliance group. In 2023, he passed an executive order that protected access to gender-affirming healthcare for trans individuals. Only 0.6% of Minnesota’s population is transgender and Walz has faced tremendous backlash. He responded to the criticism by explaining that “when someone else is given basic rights, others don’t lose theirs. We aren’t cutting a pie here. We’re giving basic rights to every single Minnesotan.” He continually supports working-class families in Minnesota by providing paid medical leave, reducing arrests targetting minority communities by legalizing recreational marijuana, and guaranteeing universal school meals for students.

What Makes Walz a Strategic Choice

In my opinion, Walz was easily the best choice for Kamala Harris’ campaign. He truly represents the heart of American values while proudly serving the Democratic party. Before the selection, Harris’ most popular pick was Josh Shapiro, governor of Pennsylvania. His high approval ratings and development of infrastructure make him a popular pick. Since Pennsylvania has voted Republican in past elections, the Democrats view this as a critical opportunity to seize a swing state.

However, he’s been heavily criticized for his response to pro-Palestinian protests with critics calling him “Genocide Josh.” His selection would’ve easily deterred a key group of swing voters that Harris needs to win this election. Harris’ other Vice President pick could have easily been Mark Kelly who is a former Navy combat pilot and astronaut. Like Walz, his public service background makes him stand out as a candidate. He’s most well-known for his heavy criticism of the border operated by the Biden administration and seeks to reform the crisis.

This is vital since Republicans tend to “win” on this campaign issue. However, if he were selected, Arizona would have to elect another senator to fill his shoes. This situation is similar to the one in which California had to elect a new senator when Kamala Harris was chosen to be Joe Biden’s vice president. Unlike California, Arizona is a swing state and this selection could’ve risked a Republican senate majority. Despite not being selected, Shapiro and Kelly’s contributions to the country will undoubtedly continue.

Conclusion

As a Democrat myself, Kamala Harris’ selection of Tim Walz as her Vice President has offered a renewed sense of hope and direction. Walz’s small-town values and commitment to public service have resonated with voters, setting him apart as a genuine and relatable candidate. His impactful leadership in Minnesota, especially in healthcare, education, and civil rights, underscores his dedication to the issues that matter most to everyday Americans. As the Harris-Walz ticket gains momentum, their progressive vision offers a unifying path for the nation.
