La Cañada Students Weigh in on the 2020 Election in Outspoken Oppa Polls

On November 3rd, 2020, the United States presidential election occurred, pinning President Trump and Former Vice President Joe Biden in an incredibly contentious election. As of 7:00 PM PST, on November 4th, 2020, Joe Biden has 264 electoral votes, and Donald Trump has 214 electoral votes, according to the Associated Press.

Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Nevada, and Alaska are all still reporting votes. Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, and Alaska are projected to go to Trump; however, Nevada is too close to call with a 0.6 percent difference between Trump and Biden. Nevada seems like the state that will define the election, especially if Biden secures Arizona. If Trump wins the states he is projected to win, and Biden wins Nevada, then Biden will win the election, with 270 electoral votes.

During election day, 14 Outspoken Oppa polls asking 14 questions opened on various social media platforms for 24 hours, estimating the political viewpoint of nearly 160 La Cañada students. All of them asked questions on pressing social issues, foreign relations, and the character of both candidates.

Who Will Help Recover From COVID-19 Better?

In the first poll of the election, 147 students voted on who they believed could better handle COVID-19. Of the 147 students, 29% favored Trump, and 71% favored Biden. The poll was taken after 233 thousand Americans died from the virus, during a time of great economic uncertainty.

Who Has a Better Economic Policy?

In the second poll, 142 students voted on who they believed could better handle the economy, during a time of mass unemployment and poverty. Of the 142 students, 55% favored Trump, and 45% favored Biden. This was taken after Biden promised to cut certain Trump tax cuts, increased government regulations on the fossil fuel industry, and increase the corporate tax rate by 7 percent, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Who Will Be Tougher on China?

In the third poll, 139 students voted on who had a more aggressive foreign policy towards China. Of the 139 students, 74% favored Trump, and 26% favored Biden. This was taken after a mounting bipartisan consensus stating China is the greatest geopolitical threat to the United States occurred, according to the Pew Research Center.

Who Will Ease Race Tensions More?

In the fourth poll, 138 students voted on who will be able to ease racial tensions in America. Of the 138 students, 21% favored Trump, and 79% favored Biden. This was taken after hundreds of thousands of Black Lives Matter protesters took to the streets for several months and after numerous calls to “defund” the police were made.

Who has a Better Immigration Policy?

In the fifth poll, 137 students voted on who has a better immigration policy, especially on asylum seekers at the US-Mexico border. Of the 137 students, 38% favored Trump, and 62% favored Biden. This poll was taken after Trump consistently pushed for a wall along the US-Mexico border, and Biden pledged to provide healthcare coverage to illegal immigrants, according to the Washington Post.

Who has a Better Healthcare Plan?

In the sixth poll, 137 students voted on who has a better healthcare plan. Of the 137 students, 23% favored Trump, and 77% favored Biden. This was taken after Trump pledged to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and Biden pledged to enact a public option for healthcare.

Who Has a Better Solution for Climate Change?

In the seventh poll, 136 students voted on who has a better solution for handling the threat of climate change. Of the 136 students, 16% favored Trump, and 84% favored Biden. This was taken after Trump refusing to pass any significant legislation to mitigate the levels of carbon emissions expelled by fossil fuel industries, and Biden pledging to enact a variation of the Green New Deal.

Who has a Better Gun Control Policy?

In the eighth poll, 134 students voted on who has the better gun control policy to address the mass shootings in America. Of the 134 students, 36% favored Trump, and 64% favored Biden. This was taken after the infamous 2018 El Paso shooting, which prompted calls for a stricter process to obtain guns.

Who Has a Better Abortion Policy?

In the ninth poll, 132 students voted on who has a better abortion policy; abortion has been a tremendous hot button issue since it was legalized nationally in 1973. Of the 132 students, 27% favored Trump, and 73% favored Biden. This comes after Trump’s appointment of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, presumptively the key factor in overturning the Supreme Court decision that nationally legalized abortion. Alternatively, Joe Biden pledged to codify Roe V. Wade in federal law.

Who Is Stronger on Russia?

In the tenth poll, 131 students voted on who will have a more aggressive policy towards Russia. Of the 131 students, 47% favored Trump, and 53% favored Biden. This was taken after Trump’s widely known relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden’s son’s link with Russia.

Who Will Appoint Better Candidates to the US Supreme Court?

In the eleventh poll, 131 students voted on who will appoint better candidates to the US Supreme Court. Of the 131 students, 34% favored Trump, and 66% favored Biden. This was taken after Trump’s third appointment to the Supreme Court, who have all been conservative textualists, and Biden refusing to answer if he would add more seats to the Supreme Court, given the opportunity as president.

Who Will be a Better Leader on the World Stage?

In the twelfth poll, 130 students voted on who will be a better leader on the world stage. Of the 130 students, 32% favored Trump, and 68% favored Biden. This comes after Trump’s overall relationship with foreign leaders and Biden’s experience in international politics, both as a vice president and as a senior senator.

Who is More Honest?

In the thirteenth poll, 130 students voted on who they believed was more honest to the American people. Of the 130 people, 29% favored Trump, and 71% favored Biden. This comes after Trump and Biden have failed numerous fact checks on numerous topics.

Who do You Want to Win?

In the fourteenth and final poll, 127 students stated who they want to win the 2020 presidential election. Of the 127 students, 30% favored Trump, and 70% favored Biden. This comes after a relatively consistent notion of La Cañada students being predominantly socially and economically liberal.


La Cañada Flintridge is a city in Southern California, consisting of approximately 20,000 residents.
